Standard Chartered was formed in 1969 through a merger of two banks: The Standard Bank of British South Africa, founded in 1863, and the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China, founded in 1853.

Both companies were keen to capitalise on the huge expansion of trade and to earn the handsome profits to be made from financing the movement of goods between Europe, Asia and Africa.
The Chartered Bank
    * Founded by James Wilson following the grant of a Royal Charter by Queen Victoria in 1853.
    * Chartered opened its first branches in Mumbai (Bombay), Kolkata and Shanghai in 1858, followed by Hong Kong and Singapore in 1859.
    * Traditional trade was in cotton from Mumbai (Bombay), indigo and tea from Kolkata, rice from Burma, sugar from Java, tobacco from Sumatra, hemp from Manila and silk from Yokohama.
    * Played a major role in the development of trade with the East which followed the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 and the extension of the telegraph to China in 1871.
    * In 1957 Chartered Bank bought the Eastern Bank together with the Ionian Bank's Cyprus Branches. This established a presence in the Gulf.

Job Description:

Contributes to the right balance of growth, profitability and control of the business by:
  • Providing Senior Wholesale Banking management with frequent, complete, accurate, timely and valid information as to the performance of the WB business on a monthly basis.
  • Managing the processes and systems for formulating and evaluating business strategies/performance including planning, forecasting and budgeting, advanced analysis of financial data and teams profitability.
  • Focusing on design, development, implementation, control and maintenance of management performance processes within WB.
  • Ensure the accurate and timely monthly reporting of financial information
  • Preparation of a comprehensive budget and forecasts for the Wholesale Bank.
  • Prepare monthly Customer Profitability.
  • ALCO & RALCO Issues.
  • Weekly Sales Reporting Issues.
  • Build on key team coherence to deliver on Business Support performance objectives
Key Roles and Responsibility

Business Partnering:

• Support the Wholesale Bank on strategy and monitor progress towards Key Performance Indicators.
• Actively implement the business partnering concept between Ghana finance teams and the wholesale Bank.
• Actively implement a consistent path to the Group Business Model and migrate best practice.

Reporting:

• Assist Snr Partner to report Wholesale Bank monthly performance and ensure reports are timely and accurate at both product and customer segment levels.  This includes the consistent application of FTP and cost allocation methodologies.
• Ensure Daily ALCO report is accurate and reconciliation issues are resolved.
• Review Ghana monthly ALCO and RALCO reporting and ensure timely submission to Group Market Risk.
• Ensure that weekly Sales Reports are accurate.
• Ensure Daily ALCO report is accurate and reconciliation issues are resolved.

Budgeting and Planning:

• Actively support the formulation of the annual Wholesale Bank budget.
• Actively support Wholesale Bank Business Heads in developing and Monitoring the Value Based Management (VBM).
• Assist EDF in formulation of consistent management processes across Ghana to support the VBM strategy.

Management Control:

• Actively support the EDF in the proper application of accounting principles and disciplines from the Group Management Accounting manual.

Project Management:

• Implement project accounting disciplines and tracking for all pan African and local projects and ensure benefits tracking is carried out.

Qualification and Skills

• A broad appreciation of banking practice and management techniques.
• A good knowledge of Group and local banking accounting procedures and requirements.
• Ability to analyze, evaluate and communicate clearly and logically both in writing and orally.
• A formal business studies qualification – University degree in finance/economics and/or professional qualification – CA, CIMA, ACCA, CIS, etc.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills
• An eye for detail and accuracy with a strong analytical capability
• Sound knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Group Accounting Policy
• High level of computer literacy is required.
