Global Water Initiative (GWI) Recruitment For Project Coordinator
Global Water Initiative (GWI) Recruitment For Project Coordinator
The Global Water Initiative (GWI) addresses the declining state of the world's supply of fresh water and the lack of access to clean water services by the world's poorest people. It brings together the talents and experiences of seven leading international organizations—Action Against Hunger—USA, CARE, Catholic Relief Services (CRS), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), Oxfam America and SOS Sahel UK—to work out effective solutions.
The creation of the GWI comes at a time when more than 1 billion people lack access to improved water sources and more than 2.6 billion people lack adequate sanitation.

Global Water Initiative (GWI) Project Coordinator Job vacancy
Global Water Initiative (GWI) Project Coordinator Job vacancy
The Global Water Initiative is a coalition of seven international organizations1 with a plan to change the landscape of water, sanitation and hygiene services in 13 countries in Central America, West Africa and East Africa. For a minimum of 10 years, these partners will address the challenges of providing long-term access to clean water and sanitation for homes and livelihoods, while promoting the protection and sustainable management of ecosystems and watersheds. The partner organizations focus on the needs of some of the world’s poorest and most vulnerable communities including those living in arid and semiarid areas.
Each year, over $15 million is made available by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation. “It is our objective to utilize and leverage the experience of our partners to create a flexible and spontaneous approach to providing poor communities access to safe drinking water. By building new constituencies, creating stronger alliances and engaging all stakeholders, it is our hope to create a new vision and an effective platform for change,” stated Howard Buffett, President of the Foundation.
The individual partners have extensive experience working with poor and vulnerable populations in the areas of water, sanitation and the environment. Yet the GWI provides an unprecedented opportunity to implement a more ambitious approach to a complex problem through collaboration and ongoing learning. By combining ideas, experiences and geographical reach, the partners will work with local organizations and agencies to create lasting change in the 13 countries.

Situated along the Gulf of Guinea, the West African country of Ghana has a total forest area of approximately 22.7 million acres (9.2 million hectares), which represents about 40 percent of its total land area. Though the dominant forest formation is savanna woodlands, some tropical high forest still exists, mostly in the southwestern part of the country. The total remaining closed forest area covers some 21 million acres (8.5 million hectares) and contains as many as 225 types of mammals and 728 bird species, including seven threatened species. There's also a high degree of butterfly endemism, meaning that these species exist nowhere else in the world.
What remains of Ghana's tropical high forest is highly fragmented. Only about 4.4 million acres (1.8 million hectares) are well conserved, nearly all of which is classified as forest reserve. This puts tremendous pressure on the remaining off-reserve areas of high forest, where more than half of Ghana's annual timber production takes place.
